Dog Days of Summer

“When Sirius the star would appear in the sky, it marked the very hottest days of the year.”

Here in the deep south of Mississippi, we have certainly made it to the “Dog Days.” Tomatoes are cooking while on the very vines that provided their life; the proper term is sun scathed. The rest of the garden is also burned and dying as well. I should have ripped every plant out at the beginning of July, amd replanted the entire garden. Pumpkins should be going in the dirt right now, but there will be no pumpkins at L2T this year. The heat kills everything, including my motivation.

I will tell you this; I HATE July in the great state of Mississippi. July turns itself into a series of days where the heat & humidity team up to beat you back inside the safety & comfort of your home. The combination of heat/humidity drains my body, both physically amd mentally, making it nearly impossible to get any real work done while outside. It reminds me how much I hated the frigid January temps while a child in Illinois. July is for the longing of fall, when the temps drop just enough for life to begin again. For me, July is my time to read, enjoy movies, and create plans for the rest of the year.

I hope to spend my fall & winter at the farm, and I hope to build the new fence for next season’s garden. The fence will be10 feet tall, and secure from the neighbors hoping to intrude on all our efforts. I’m speaking directly to you deer and rabbits.
